Black Vishnupuri silk, hand block-printed in cream and gold. Vishnupuri-chhapa, after the looms of Bengal and the stamp that gives this saree its pattern.
A black silk saree from Bishnupur in West Bengal, hand block-printed across the body in cream and gold. Bishnupuri silk is woven on traditional pit looms in the temple town the cloth takes its name from. The blocks themselves are carved teak, stamped onto the silk one motif at a time: which is why no two prints align exactly the same way.
